Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy

Objectives

Poseidon Atlantic Sailing School aims to:

  • Make sailing an activity that is genuinely open to anyone who wishes to take part.

  • Provide a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for everyone involved with PASSGC.

  • Give everyone the opportunity to enjoy sailing and develop their skills, subject to appropriate safety considerations.

  • Consider individual needs and, where reasonably possible, make adjustments to enable participation.

  • Ensure that clients, instructors and staff are treated fairly, with dignity and respect.

Policy Statement

Poseidon Atlantic Sailing School is committed to equality of opportunity.

We aim to ensure that all present and potential clients, instructors and staff are treated fairly and on an equal basis, irrespective of:

  • Sex

  • Age

  • Disability

  • Race

  • Religion or belief

  • Sexual orientation

  • Pregnancy and maternity

  • Marriage and civil partnership

  • Gender reassignment

  • Social status

PASSGC will not tolerate discrimination, harassment or unfair treatment on the basis of any of these characteristics.

Access to Sailing and Activities

We believe that sailing should be accessible to anyone who can safely participate.

This policy applies to all PASSGC activities, including:

  • Sailing experiences

  • Day sailing

  • Private instruction

  • Skills development

  • Mile building

  • Practical training courses

  • Theory training

  • RYA courses

  • Other activities provided by PASSGC

  •

We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate individual requirements and will discuss specific needs with clients before or during their activity or course.

Reasonable Adjustments

Where a client or member of staff has a disability or other requirement that may affect their participation, we will consider what reasonable adjustments or additional measures may be possible.

Any adjustment must take into account:

  • The safety of the individual

  • The safety of other people

  • The safe operation of the vessel

  • The nature of the activity

  • The prevailing weather and sea conditions

  • Any applicable training or assessment requirements

Where PASSGC delivers an externally certificated course, any adjustment must also maintain the required standard and integrity of that qualification or assessment.

Fitness to Participate

Sailing is a physical activity and takes place in an environment where conditions can change quickly.

Not every course, sailing activity or voyage will be suitable for every individual or circumstance.

Where a client's health, fitness or circumstances may affect their ability to participate safely, we may need to discuss their requirements before accepting a booking or before allowing them to participate in a particular activity.

Clients should seek appropriate medical advice if they are unsure whether they are fit to participate.

Where we reasonably believe that participation would present an unacceptable safety risk to the individual or others on board, PASSGC may need to:

  • Recommend an alternative activity

  • Make reasonable adjustments where possible

  • Postpone participation

  • Restrict participation in a particular activity

  • Decline or cancel a booking where participation cannot be made reasonably safe

Any decision will be made with consideration for the individual's circumstances wherever possible.

Pregnancy

PASSGC recognises pregnancy and maternity as protected characteristics and will treat clients fairly and respectfully.

However, sailing can involve movement of the vessel, uneven surfaces, climbing, working on deck and exposure to changing weather and sea conditions. The suitability of participation during pregnancy therefore needs to be considered on an individual basis.

Clients who are pregnant should inform PASSGC when booking or as soon as they become aware that their pregnancy may affect their participation.

We may recommend that a client obtains appropriate medical advice before participating where there is a reasonable concern about their ability to take part safely.

The skipper retains responsibility for the safety of everyone aboard and may restrict or decline participation where the circumstances create an unacceptable safety risk.

Training & Assessment

PASSGC will make reasonable efforts to ensure that its training and instructional activities are accessible to those who wish to participate.

Where a course or assessment has specific standards that must be met, reasonable adjustments will be considered provided they do not compromise the required standard, safety or integrity of the course or qualification.

Where PASSGC is delivering an RYA course, we will also comply with the applicable RYA requirements relating to equality, accessibility and reasonable adjustments.

Responsibilities

The Chief Instructor and Operations Support Manager have overall responsibility for the implementation of this policy.

All instructors and staff are expected to:

  • Treat clients and colleagues fairly and respectfully.

  • Avoid discriminatory behaviour.

  • Consider individual needs appropriately.

  • Report concerns regarding discrimination, harassment or unfair treatment to the Chief Instructor or Operations Support Manager.

  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality when dealing with personal or sensitive information.

Raising Concern

Anyone who believes they have experienced discrimination, harassment or unfair treatment while dealing with Poseidon Atlantic Sailing School is encouraged to raise the matter with the Chief Instructor or Operations Support Manager.

Concerns will be taken seriously and dealt with fairly and confidentially, where appropriate.

Complaints relating to our services or the delivery of training will be dealt with in accordance with our Complaints Procedure.
